Chapter 6
## The Seat Where She Watched
Emma’s letter contained only a few lines.
*My dearest Daniel,*
*I saw your whole performance. I heard every word, every song and all the applause.*
*If you looked into the audience and saw Grandpa sitting beside an empty seat, please know that the seat was not empty. He carried me there with him.*
Daniel read the letter twice.
Then he looked at Robert.
“You really showed her?”
“Every second.”
“Did she like my song?”
Robert’s voice broke.
“She said, ‘That’s my boy.’”
Daniel threw his arms around his grandfather.
Michael joined them, and the three remained together in the nearly empty auditorium while workers turned off the stage lights one by one.
In the following years, Daniel kept performing.
Robert attended every concert, school ceremony and graduation. He always arrived early and reserved the seat beside him.
On that seat, he placed Emma’s photograph.
Ten years later, Daniel stood on another stage to receive his college diploma. Before joining his classmates, he walked to the front row and embraced his grandfather.
“You kept your promise for a long time,” Daniel said.
Robert looked at Emma’s photograph.
“I only promised her one night.”
“No,” Daniel replied. “You promised I would never look into an audience and feel alone.”
When Daniel’s name was announced, Robert rose and applauded with both hands above his head.
The seat beside him remained empty.
But Daniel no longer saw an empty chair.
He saw his mother watching through a phone screen.
He saw his grandfather walking away from the person he loved most to keep her final promise.
And at last, he understood the choice everyone had once mistaken for abandonment.
Robert had not left his daughter alone.
He had carried her love to the one place she could no longer reach.
