THE PROMISE HE REFUSED TO EXPLAIN

Chapter 5

## What Michael Never Knew

.

Robert did not tell Daniel that night.

He gave the boy the flowers, praised his performance and stayed through the small celebration afterward—just as Emma had requested.

Michael arrived at the school an hour later.

One look at his face told Robert everything.

“You left her,” Michael said.

Robert accepted the accusation without defending himself.

“She kept asking whether Daniel had finished,” Michael continued. “And you were here.”

Robert handed him Emma’s letter.

“She asked me to come.”

Michael did not take it.

“No. You don’t get to hide behind something she wrote.”

A nurse who had accompanied him stepped forward.

“Your wife recorded a message this morning.”

She handed Michael her phone.

Emma appeared on the screen.

“Michael, please don’t blame Dad. I knew you would stay with me, and I knew Daniel would need someone in the audience. I could not let either of you choose, so I chose for you.”

Michael’s anger slowly disappeared.

“You gave me your hand,” Emma continued. “Dad gave Daniel his eyes. Between the two of you, I was in both rooms.”

Michael sat down heavily.

Robert lowered himself beside him.

“I wanted to stay,” Robert said. “Every step toward that school felt like I was abandoning her.”

Michael covered his face.

“You should have told me.”

“She wanted you beside her without wondering whether Daniel was alone.”

For several minutes, neither man spoke.

Then Daniel approached, still wearing his stage costume.

“Where’s Mom?”

Michael looked at Robert, unable to answer.

Robert removed a second envelope from his coat.

Emma had written Daniel’s name across it.

The boy stared at the handwriting.

“Did Mom give you that?”

Robert nodded.

Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
