Chapter 3
## The Cruelest Performance
Arthur returned the documents and closed the drawer seconds before Evan entered.
“Looking for something?” Evan asked.
“My reading glasses.”
“They’re beside your bed.”
Evan smiled, but his eyes remained cold.
Arthur walked past him without answering.
Inside the laundry room, Arthur called his sister-in-law, Sarah. He told her to send a taxi and keep Claire at her house, no matter how angry she became.
Then he contacted the police.
The dispatcher told him officers were on their way, but Arthur knew Claire would never leave willingly without an explanation. Worse, Evan controlled the security cameras and shared her phone location.
If Arthur accused him too soon, Evan might take Claire and disappear before help arrived.
Arthur needed Evan to believe he suspected nothing.
More importantly, he needed Claire safely outside.
That was when Arthur created the most painful plan of his life.
He would pretend to disown her.
Evan’s greed supplied the final piece. Arthur mentioned that he was considering transferring the house before his health declined. As Arthur expected, Evan immediately became interested.
When the taxi arrived, Arthur carried Claire’s suitcase downstairs.
Every cruel sentence on the porch had been rehearsed in his mind. But he had not prepared for the look in his daughter’s eyes when she said:
“You chose him over me.”
For one terrible second, Arthur almost confessed everything.
Then he remembered the powder dissolving in her tea.
He let her walk away believing the worst of him.
Now, inside the locked house, Arthur placed the insurance policy on the dining table and set the recorder beside it.
Evan slowly removed his jacket.
“You’re confused,” he said. “Claire signed that herself.”
“No, she didn’t.”
“You’re an old man with memory problems. Who will believe you?”
Arthur’s hand moved toward his pocket.
Evan noticed.
And then he asked quietly:
“Did you keep the tea?”
