THE NIGHT HE MADE HER HATE HIM

Chapter 2

## What Arthur Saw in the Kitchen

.

Two hours earlier, Arthur had woken to the sound of a cupboard closing.

He entered the dark hallway and saw Evan standing alone in the kitchen. A cup of tea rested on the counter—the same blue cup Claire used every night.

Evan removed a small packet from his jacket, emptied something into the tea and stirred until it disappeared.

Arthur stepped back before Evan could see him.

For several weeks, Claire had complained of sudden dizziness and exhaustion. Everyone blamed the pregnancy. Evan always volunteered to prepare her evening tea.

Arthur had accepted that explanation until that moment.

From behind the half-closed kitchen door, he heard Evan leave a voice message.

“She’ll sign the remaining papers tomorrow. After the wedding, her father won’t be able to interfere.”

Arthur waited until Evan walked upstairs. Then he poured the tea into a sealed glass jar and replaced it with another cup.

Claire entered moments later.

“You’re still awake?” she asked.

“Couldn’t sleep.”

She smiled and kissed his cheek. Arthur nearly told her everything, but Evan appeared behind her before he could speak.

“There you are,” Evan said, placing a hand on Claire’s shoulder. “You need to rest.”

Arthur watched his daughter leave with him.

In the study, he searched the desk Evan had been using. Inside a folder marked *Wedding Receipts*, Arthur found a life insurance policy for one million dollars.

Claire’s signature appeared at the bottom.

But Arthur recognized every curve of his daughter’s handwriting.

The signature was not hers.

Beneath the policy lay another document—an unfinished transfer of ownership for Arthur’s house.

The beneficiary on both documents was Evan Mercer.

Then Arthur heard footsteps approaching the study.
