BILLY WALKER HAD FIRST CLAIM ON “CRAZY.” HE GAVE IT UP FOR ANOTHER SONG — PATSY CLINE TOOK IT TO NO. 2, AND THE SONG HE GOT IN RETURN GAVE HIM HIS ONLY NO. 1. In 1961, Billy Walker already knew what Willie Nelson could do. He had recorded Willie’s “Funny How Time Slips Away,” and when “Crazy” came along, Walker had first claim on the song and planned to record it. Then Patsy Cline’s producer, Owen Bradley, wanted it for her. Walker agreed to step aside after being offered another song instead: “Charlie’s Shoes.” Patsy recorded “Crazy” in Nashville that year. Her version climbed to No. 2 on the country chart and No. 9 on the pop chart, becoming one of the records that would define her forever. Walker recorded “Charlie’s Shoes” on November 20, 1961. The following spring, it reached No. 1. It would be the only country No. 1 of Billy Walker’s long career. He gave up “Crazy” — and somehow walked away with the biggest hit he ever had.

WHEN TOM T. HALL WROTE ABOUT HIS BOYHOOD HERO, HE CHANGED THE MAN’S NAME BUT REFUSED TO MOVE HIM OFF HIS OWN HILL. The hero was Lonnie Easterly, a guitar picker outside Olive Hill, Kentucky, who lived on Clayton Hill next door to a family called the Delaneys. Hall built the invented name out of the hill and the neighbors. He said he did it so he would not have to move the geography around and lose the reality of what he was writing about. Easterly never made the move to Tennessee. He died while Hall was still a boy, more than twenty years before the song existed, and the Country Music Hall of Fame credits his tutelage as what shaped Hall’s earliest playing. By the time “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died” spent two weeks at No. 1 in September 1971 and crossed onto the pop chart at No. 42, Hall was a Nashville songwriter, a recording artist and a brand-new Grand Ole Opry member — everything the older man had wanted and missed. Then, in 1978, Hall wrote a sequel. “Son of Clayton Delaney” drops the narrator into a Louisville bar watching a long-haired kid play electric guitar, and the kid turns out to be the picker’s son. That one charted too. A man who never left Kentucky is in the country charts twice, both times under a name that was never his.

HIS LABEL BURIED THE SONG HE WANTED TO RELEASE NEXT—SO MERLE HAGGARD HELD ONTO IT FOR THREE YEARS AND PUT IT OUT IN HIS OWN VOICE. In 1969, “Okie from Muskogee” turned Merle Haggard into the voice of conservative America. Capitol Records wanted the next single to sound exactly like it. He handed them something else. Haggard had written a song about a white man in love with a Black woman, and about the line the world drew between them. Interracial marriage had been legal nationwide for only two years. Ken Nelson, who ran Capitol’s country division, talked him out of releasing it. “The Fightin’ Side of Me” went out instead and hit number one. The image held. Merle never fought them in the press. He simply refused to let the song go. In 1972 he made an album where he introduced every track himself, speaking before the music started. That is where it finally appeared, carrying a woman’s name as its title. He called it his favorite because it told the plain truth, and said it had gone unreleased because the time wasn’t right. He never re-recorded it. He just waited.

PATSY CLINE WANTED TO SING A DIFFERENT SONG ON NATIONAL TELEVISION. THE PRODUCER OVERRULED HER — AND THE SONG PATSY DIDN’T EVEN LIKE BECAME HER FIRST GREAT HIT. On January 21, 1957, Patsy Cline appeared on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts in New York. She planned to sing “A Poor Man’s Roses (Or a Rich Man’s Gold).” But producer Janette Davis wanted “Walkin’ After Midnight,” a song Patsy had already recorded but did not particularly care for. Patsy resisted, then finally agreed. Davis also persuaded her to trade her cowgirl outfit for a cocktail dress. Then Patsy walked onto the stage and sang the song she hadn’t wanted to sing. The audience response was so strong that she won the competition that night. Arthur Godfrey told her she had won before she even left the stage. Decca rushed “Walkin’ After Midnight” out as a single on February 11. It climbed to No. 2 on the country chart and No. 12 on the pop chart, giving Patsy Cline her first major hit and her first national breakthrough. TAMMY’S FIRST WORRY WASN’T THE MESSAGE — IT WAS WHETHER SHE COULD KEEP HITTING THAT “GOD-AWFUL HIGH NOTE.” In 1968, Tammy Wynette was already a country star when she sat down with producer Billy Sherrill at Epic Records in Nashville. In roughly 15 minutes, they wrote “Stand by Your Man.” Tammy was not immediately convinced. The song sounded different from her earlier hits, and she worried about the demanding high note near the end. She later joked that she would have to sing that note for the rest of her life. In January 1947, Hank Williams was riding home after a show in Fort Deposit, Alabama. His mother, Lillie, was driving toward Montgomery while Hank slept in the back seat. As they neared home, she spotted the lights of Dannelly Field airport and woke him. “I just saw the light,” she told him. Hank remembered the words. He soon turned that simple remark into “I Saw the Light,” a song about a man who had wandered through darkness and finally found redemption. Freddy Fender first recorded “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” in 1959. Sixteen years later — after prison, years as an auto mechanic, and a career that seemed finished — he recorded it again and finally took it to No. 1. He was born Baldemar Huerta in San Benito, Texas, to a family of migrant workers. As a young singer, he changed his name to Freddy Fender, believing it would give him a better chance with Anglo audiences. Then everything stopped. In 1960, Fender was arrested in Baton Rouge for marijuana possession and sentenced to Angola prison. He served roughly three years before Louisiana governor and songwriter Jimmie Davis helped secure his release. Back in Texas, Fender worked as an auto mechanic, attended college, and played music when he could. For years, Nashville seemed far away. Then producer Huey P. Meaux gave him “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” Fender sang it in English and Spanish. In 1975, the song reached No. 1 on both the country and pop charts. He was thirty-seven. Then Fender went back to the song he had recorded before prison — “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.” The new version reached No. 1 country too. Sixteen years after the song first appeared, Freddy Fender finally got the hit his younger self had never lived long enough to see coming.

She kept renewing her beautician’s license every year, even after “Stand by Your Man” had sold millions. Tammy Wynette had known poverty too well to believe success could never disappear. Before Nashville, she was Wynette Pugh — raised on a Mississippi cotton farm, married at seventeen, and a mother of three by twenty-two. She went to beauty school, worked in a Birmingham salon, and sang at night. When her youngest daughter became seriously ill with spinal meningitis, Tammy kept working while trying to build a singing career. Her husband, Euple Byrd, thought the dream was foolish. After their marriage ended, he reportedly told her, “Dream on.” In 1966, Tammy packed her three daughters into a car and headed for Nashville. Rejection followed until she reached producer Billy Sherrill at Epic Records. He eventually signed her, changed her first name to Tammy, and helped shape the voice country music would soon know everywhere. “Apartment #9” came first. Before Charley Pride became one of country music’s biggest stars, Nashville had already heard his voice — the problem was getting someone to believe the singer behind it could be accepted. Pride had spent years chasing a baseball career before country singers Red Sovine and Red Foley encouraged him to try Nashville. There, manager Jack Johnson eventually introduced him to producer Cowboy Jack Clement. Clement heard something worth risking money on. In 1965, he paid for Pride to record professional demos at RCA Studio B, then took those recordings to RCA Nashville chief Chet Atkins. Even with the voice on tape, getting a record deal was difficult. A Black country singer was still considered a commercial gamble in Nashville. Atkins decided to trust what he heard. RCA signed Pride, and his first two singles made little impact. Then “Just Between You and Me” reached the country Top 10 in 1966 and earned him his first Grammy nomination. The gamble had worked. Charley Pride would eventually score 29 No. 1 country singles and become CMA Entertainer of the Year. But before all of that, there was simply a demo tape, Cowboy Jack Clement willing to pay for it, and Chet Atkins willing to listen.

Waylon Jennings wrote “Just to Satisfy You” in 1963. It took nearly 20 years — and Willie Nelson — for the song to finally reach No. 1. Waylon wrote it with Don Bowman when his national career had barely begun. He recorded the song early, and it became a local favorite around Phoenix, but it never gave him the breakthrough he was looking for. Still, Waylon never left it behind. He recorded it again and made it the title track of his 1969 album. Other singers, including Glen Campbell, recorded it too. Years passed, and Waylon’s career grew far beyond the young singer who had first written the song. Then in 1982, he returned to it one more time. This time Willie Nelson sang beside him. Their version of “Just to Satisfy You” climbed all the way to No. 1 on Billboard’s country chart and stayed there for two weeks. Waylon once admitted he had almost not recorded the song at all because he didn’t think it was very good. Nearly two decades later, it was sitting at No. 1. Sometimes a song simply has to wait for its moment.
