Chapter 4
## The Recorder in His Pocket
Arthur did not answer.
Evan stepped closer.
“You should have stayed out of our affairs.”
“My daughter is my affair.”
“She was going to leave you after the wedding anyway.”
“That’s what you told her, isn’t it? That I was becoming confused?”
Evan smiled.
Claire had recently started questioning her father’s memory. Keys disappeared and reappeared in strange places. Appointments vanished from the calendar. Documents Arthur remembered signing were suddenly missing.
Until that night, Arthur had blamed his age.
Now he understood that Evan had been creating evidence against him.
“You wanted her to think I couldn’t be trusted,” Arthur said.
“I wanted her to stop listening to you.”
“And the policy?”
Evan glanced toward the recorder.
Arthur placed both hands flat on the table.
“You said Claire would sign the remaining papers tomorrow. What papers?”
“You heard that?”
“Enough of it.”
Evan reached for the recorder, but Arthur pulled it away.
At that moment, red and blue lights appeared through the rain-streaked windows.
Evan froze.
Arthur had left his phone connected to the emergency operator inside his cardigan pocket. Every word had been heard.
Police entered through the side door moments later.
The sealed jar from the kitchen was collected, along with the insurance papers and the unfinished property transfer. Evan was escorted from the house while still insisting it was all a misunderstanding.
Arthur remained beside the dining table after everyone had gone.
His hands were shaking more violently now.
Sarah called from her home.
“Claire knows about the policy,” she said. “I showed her the photographs you sent me.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“Does she want to speak to me?”
A long silence followed.
“No,” Sarah said softly. “Not yet.”
Arthur looked toward the suitcase marks still visible on the wet porch.
He had protected his daughter.
But he did not know whether he had lost her anyway.
