Chapter 6
The Exchange
Gabriel did not go to the warehouse alone.
He allowed Adrian to believe he did.
The original flash drive remained with Detective Ortiz. Gabriel carried a copy containing altered folders that would require several minutes to verify. A tiny transmitter was sewn into the lining of the evidence bag.
Police vehicles waited beyond the nearest highway exit.
Thomas had remained at the house after Adrian left. Officers found Ellie unharmed behind her locked bedroom door.
Before Gabriel departed, she asked one question.
“Are you coming back?”
He knelt in front of her.
“Yes.”
“You promise?”
“I promise I will do everything possible to come back.”
Miriam had taught him never to make promises no human being could guarantee.
Ellie considered his answer, then placed Bunny in his hands.
“For luck.”
At the warehouse, Vanessa searched Gabriel and took his phone. Cole Turner waited beside a parked van.
Marcus and Daniel remained bound near a row of empty loading bays.
Adrian stood beneath a hanging industrial light.
He had aged since Gabriel last saw him, but his smile had not changed.
“You brought it.”
“Release them.”
“First, the drive.”
Gabriel held up the evidence bag.
“You hired two strangers to corner a five-year-old.”
“I hired them to display a bracelet and invite her outside.”
“She said no.”
“They exceeded their instructions.”
Vanessa looked away.
Adrian continued as if Ellie’s fear were an administrative inconvenience.
“You were supposed to come after them. They would give you the address, and we would have had this conversation without involving anyone else.”
“You chose a child because you thought fear would make me careless.”
“It brought you here.”
Gabriel tossed the bag onto the concrete between them.
Adrian gestured for Cole to retrieve it.
As Cole connected the drive to a laptop, Gabriel looked at Marcus.
The guard’s lower lip was split. Daniel appeared frightened but alert.
“I’m sorry,” Marcus said.
Gabriel did not answer.
Cole opened the first folder.
“It’s here.”
Adrian relaxed.
That was the moment Marcus moved.
He drove his shoulder into Vanessa’s legs, knocking her off balance. Daniel rolled away as she fell.
Gabriel crossed the distance to Cole and slammed the laptop shut on his hand. Cole released it with a shout.
Adrian ran toward the van.
Thomas stepped from behind the vehicle.
He had followed Adrian from Gabriel’s home.
For two years, Adrian had believed Thomas belonged to him. That belief lasted until Thomas blocked the van door.
“You should have stayed bought,” Adrian said.
“I was never yours.”
Adrian struck him.
Thomas staggered but remained upright.
Police sirens sounded beyond the warehouse.
Cole fled toward a side exit, where officers entered and ordered him to the ground. Vanessa raised both hands. Marcus pulled the tape from Daniel’s wrists.
Adrian looked around and realized every route had closed.
He turned toward Gabriel.
“You think this ends with me?”
“It ends with you answering questions.”
“You still don’t know what happened at the hospital.”
Gabriel stopped.
Adrian smiled.
“You believe your wife died before I reached her room.”
Officers seized his arms.
As they pulled him away, Adrian looked directly at Gabriel.
“She was still alive when I arrived.”
