THE BRACELET FROM HER MOTHER’S GRAVE

Chapter 5

The Two Men at the Door

.

Gabriel called home.

Thomas answered immediately.

“Is Ellie with you?”

“She’s upstairs drawing.”

“Put her on.”

A pause followed.

“Gabriel—”

“Put my daughter on the phone.”

Seconds later, Ellie’s voice came through.

“Daddy?”

“Are you all right?”

“Yes. Mr. Thomas made grilled cheese.”

“Go into your room and lock the door.”

She became quiet.

“Is something wrong?”

“Do exactly what I said. Take Bunny with you. I’m coming home.”

Gabriel ended the call.

Detective Ortiz dispatched officers to the house while Gabriel, Rachel, and two bank security employees remained in the vault room.

Thomas called again.

This time, Gabriel put the phone on speaker.

“I can explain the recording.”

“Start with my daughter.”

“She’s safe. She has always been safe with me.”

“Then walk outside before the police arrive.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian has Marcus’s son.”

Gabriel said nothing.

Thomas explained that Marcus’s twenty-four-year-old son, Daniel, had worked as a junior accountant at one of Adrian’s shell companies. When Daniel discovered irregular transfers, Adrian arranged the records to make it appear that he had authorized them.

Marcus had been forced to provide information about Gabriel’s movements in exchange for Adrian delaying the release of those records.

Thomas learned about the coercion and began helping Marcus. He believed they could recover Miriam’s evidence, destroy Adrian’s leverage, and protect both families without involving Gabriel.

“You lied to me for two years.”

“We were trying to keep Ellie out of it.”

“They approached her in a diner.”

“That was never the plan.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Every betrayal eventually arrived wearing the same excuse.

*We thought we were protecting you.*

“Why did you access Miriam’s drive?”

“She asked me to.”

Gabriel looked at the open box.

Thomas claimed Miriam had suspected someone inside the charity but did not know whether Marcus was cooperating willingly. She asked Thomas to check the box after her death and tell Adrian it contained nothing.

“Why would Adrian believe you?”

“Because he thought I worked for him.”

The room became silent.

Thomas continued.

“Miriam wanted someone close enough to learn what he was planning. I stayed close. Too close.”

“Where is Marcus now?”

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel heard a door close on the other end.

Then a second voice spoke.

“Actually, I do.”

Adrian Vale had entered Gabriel’s home.

“Mr. Cole,” Adrian said pleasantly, “bring the contents of Box 317 to the address I’m sending you.”

Gabriel rose.

“If you touch my daughter—”

“Ellie is still behind her locked bedroom door. Thomas is standing between me and the stairs. That arrangement can remain peaceful.”

A message appeared on Gabriel’s phone containing the address of an abandoned distribution warehouse.

“Bring the box,” Adrian said. “Come without police, or Marcus and his son will pay for your mistake.”

The call ended.

Detective Ortiz immediately contacted the officers approaching Gabriel’s house.

Before she could finish, another message arrived.

It contained a live photograph of Marcus and Daniel sitting on the floor of the warehouse, their wrists bound.

Between them stood the woman in the beige dress from the diner.

Around her wrist was Miriam’s silver bracelet.
