The Scholarship Student Was Accused of Stealing the Final Exam

Chapter 1

The Envelope in Ivy’s Backpack

This is a fictional dramatization. All characters, schools, organizations, and events are fictional.

When Ivy Chen entered Westbridge Academy that Monday morning, she was thinking about only one thing: the mathematics final scheduled for Friday.

By lunchtime, she was sitting inside Principal Ellison’s office with a sealed examination paper on the desk between them.

Vice Principal Bell stood beside the window. Ivy’s mathematics teacher, Ms. Harrow, remained near the door with her arms folded.

Principal Ellison pointed toward Ivy’s blue backpack.

“This envelope was found in the front compartment of your bag.”

Ivy stared at it. A red stamp across the front read:

CONFIDENTIAL — SENIOR MATHEMATICS FINAL

“I have never seen that before,” she said.

Ms. Harrow gave a disappointed sigh.

“The envelope contains my final examination and its complete answer key.”

Ivy felt the room tilt beneath her.

She had spent three years protecting her scholarship. Her mother worked two jobs to cover everything the scholarship did not. One accusation could take all of that away.

“You believe I stole it?” Ivy asked.

Vice Principal Bell placed a suspension form on the desk.

“The paper was found in your possession. Until we finish investigating, you will not return to class.”

Ivy searched their faces for some sign that they could see how impossible this was.

“Someone put it there.”

“Who had access to your backpack?” Principal Ellison asked.

“No one. I carried it all morning.”

Then Ivy remembered the library.

Before first period, she had left her bag beside a study table while helping the librarian carry returned books to the front desk. She had been away for less than three minutes.

Ms. Harrow’s expression changed for only a moment.

But Ivy noticed.

“I left it unattended in the library,” Ivy said. “Please check the cameras.”

Vice Principal Bell shook his head.

“The library camera system stopped recording for fifteen minutes this morning.”

Ivy looked at Ms. Harrow again.

Her teacher would not meet her eyes.

Principal Ellison slid the suspension form across the desk.

“We will contact your mother. Until then, you must remain in the reception area.”

Ivy stood slowly, fighting back tears.

As she reached the doorway, Ms. Harrow finally spoke.

“You were a promising student, Ivy. You should have thought about what you were risking.”

Ivy turned around.

“I did think about it. That is why I would never steal an exam.”

Outside the office, students were already whispering. Someone had posted a photograph of Ivy being escorted through the hallway.

By the time she reached reception, the accusation had spread across the school.

Only one person stopped beside her.

Carter Blake, the student ranked directly below Ivy, placed a folded note on the chair.

On it were seven words:

I think I know why they chose you.
