Ten Minutes by the Window

Chapter 2

## What the Boy Heard

.

“Mom,” he said, “you told me to sit here before she got on.”

His mother’s hand remained on his arm. “Theo, honey, let us talk.”

“You said she probably wouldn’t ask me to move if I was already sitting here.”

Mara looked at him. Then at the woman beside him.

A passenger across the aisle returned to his phone, suddenly intent on giving them privacy. Mara wished she could disappear into the seat.

Theo’s mother pulled the unopened snack into her lap. “I was trying to make the flight easier for him,” she told Mara. “We’ve had a long day.”

Mara believed that much. She could see the tiredness beneath the woman’s careful smile. A long day with a child in an airport could wear anyone down.

It did not change where Mara was supposed to be sitting.

Theo looked from one adult to the other. “Is this her seat?”

“Yes,” his mother said.

“I thought it was open.”

“Theo.”

“You said she might let me have it.”

Mara realized he had been told two different things. His mother had hoped she would agree to a swap; Theo had been allowed to settle in as though the seat were theirs. Now he was the one expected to feel embarrassed when the arrangement fell apart.

“It’s okay,” Mara told him. “You haven’t done anything wrong.”

His mother gave a short, strained laugh. “That’s kind of you to say.”

Theo slid his hands off the window. “I can sit in the middle.”

“You don’t have to move this second,” his mother said.

Mara heard the invitation to let another minute pass. Perhaps another thirty.

“I would like my seat back,” she said.

Her voice was calm. It surprised her how much effort that took.

The mother looked down at the snack in her lap. “Fine.”

With the seatbelt sign off, Theo unbuckled and stepped into the aisle so Mara could move across. His mother stood to let them pass. The exchange took less than a minute. No one complained. No one even seemed particularly interested.

Once Mara was seated at the window, Theo settled into 18B and his mother into 18C. For a while, all three looked straight ahead.

Mara tried to enjoy the view. The sun had moved lower, leaving a band of pink at the edge of the clouds. But she was aware of Theo beside her, quiet now, his hands folded over the snack packet.

He had been excited when she first arrived. She didn’t want him to think asking for her seat meant she disliked him.

“You saw the whole takeoff,” she said to him. “What was the best part?”

Theo considered it. “When the cars got really tiny.”

“That’s my favorite part too.”

He smiled faintly. His mother looked over, but said nothing.

A flight attendant came down the aisle collecting empty cups. She paused beside row eighteen.

“Everything all right here?”

Mara opened her mouth. Before she could answer, Theo said, “I sat in her seat for the takeoff. She’s sitting there now.”

The attendant smiled. “Sounds like you both got a turn at the window.”

Theo looked pleased with that description. Mara didn’t correct it. The flight attendant continued down the aisle.

For the rest of the flight, Mara watched the changing color outside. It was quieter than she had expected. Theo read a comic book. His mother helped him find the page he’d lost.

Shortly before landing, Theo tugged at his mother’s sleeve.

“If I want a window next time,” he asked, “can we pick one when we get the tickets?”

His mother did not answer immediately.
