WHEN LORETTA LYNN DIED IN TENNESSEE, THE ROAD BACK TO BUTCHER HOLLOW STARTED FILLING WITH MEMORY. Loretta Lynn passed away on October 4, 2022, at her ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. She was 90. The world mourned the legend — the gowns, the hits, the banned songs, the woman who made country music tell the truth about marriage, motherhood, poverty, and survival. But in Kentucky, the grief had a different address. Governor Andy Beshear said it plainly: “Today, all of Kentucky mourns the loss of our very own Loretta Lynn.” He called her a legend who blazed a trail in country music while telling the stories of Appalachia and Kentucky. And that is why her death did not only feel like losing a star. It felt like the mountains had lost one of their own. TOBY KEITH BUILT A HOUSE IN OKLAHOMA CITY FOR CHILDREN FIGHTING CANCER. YEARS LATER, DOCTORS FOUND CANCER IN HIS OWN STOMACH. Toby Keith had already built the kind of career most singers never reach: 42 Top 10 country hits, sold-out arenas, and three decades as one of Nashville’s biggest stars. But one of the things he was proudest of had nothing to do with a chart. Through the Toby Keith Foundation, he helped create OK Kids Korral in Oklahoma City, where families of children undergoing cancer treatment could stay without paying for lodging. Then, in the fall of 2021, Toby received his own diagnosis: stomach cancer. He went through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. But when his strength allowed it, he kept returning to the stage. He joked he was glad it hadn’t landed on the opening day of deer season, mentioned his six-year-old grandson taking his first deer, then arrived at the thank-yous: “A lot of people to thank and I know who they are.” He named none of them. He noted that the part about family welcoming you with open arms had gone a little differently in his case, and closed by stringing his own song titles together. Mary Jane Thomas was in the room for all 108 seconds. She met him at a show in Washington state in 1985, married him in July 1990, and came to that ceremony seventeen months after burying their daughter. Katie Williams-Dunning was 27 when her SUV crossed the median on Highway 79 in Henry County, Tennessee, in June 2020. Four months later, on March 22, 2022, Mary Jane died in Jupiter, Florida at 58. A Florida medical examiner determined a lung had been punctured during a cosmetic procedure the day before. That November night was the last time the public saw the two of them together, and their son Sam remembered his mother as “a beautiful soul who forever affected everyone who knew her.”

THE MAN WHO TAUGHT HANK WILLIAMS TO PLAY DIED A PAUPER — AND TO THIS DAY NOBODY KNOWS WHICH GRAVE IS HIS. His name was Rufus Payne. Everyone called him Tee-Tot. He was born in Lowndes County, Alabama, raised in New Orleans, and came back south playing blues and jazz on the streets of Greenville and Georgiana for whatever people dropped in his hand. In Georgiana he met a skinny white boy of about eight named Hank Williams. He showed the boy how to work chords, how to hold a crowd. Williams later said Tee-Tot was the only music teacher he ever had. In 1937 Williams moved to Montgomery, and Tee-Tot followed. Two years later he died in the charity ward of a Montgomery hospital, March 17, 1939. He was buried in Lincoln Cemetery with nothing over him. Nobody told Hank. About ten years later, playing a show back in Greenville, he asked around for the old man — he wanted to pay him back. He never found him. Hank Williams died on New Year’s Day 1953 without ever writing a song for Tee-Tot. In 2001, Alabama put up a historical marker. Hank Williams Jr. and members of the Grand Ole Opry paid for a nine-foot marble monument — set at the cemetery entrance, because after all these years no one can point to the actual grave. And in 2002, Hank Jr. finally recorded “The Tee Tot Song,” sixty-three years too late for the man to hear his own name.

RANDY TRAVIS DIDN’T WRITE “HE WALKED ON WATER.” BUT THE FIRST TIME HE HEARD IT, HE KNEW THE OLD MAN IN THE SONG. Songwriter Allen Shamblin wrote “He Walked on Water” about his great-grandfather, a former cowboy the family called Poppy Fugate. As a boy, Shamblin listened to his stories about horses, ropes and the old cowboy life. Years later, those memories became a song about a child who believed an old man could do almost anything. Then Randy Travis heard it. The song was not about his family, but it felt like it was. Randy immediately thought of his own grandfather. He remembered riding beside him on the tractor, following him in the car, and even sitting on the horse while his grandfather plowed. “I had a grandfather that I can relate that to, very much so,” Randy later said. Randy recorded the song, and in 1990 it reached No. 2 on Billboard’s country chart. Allen Shamblin wrote it for one old man. Randy Travis sang it for another.

Freddy Fender first recorded “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” in 1959. Sixteen years later — after prison, years as an auto mechanic, and a career that seemed finished — he recorded it again and finally took it to No. 1. He was born Baldemar Huerta in San Benito, Texas, to a family of migrant workers. As a young singer, he changed his name to Freddy Fender, believing it would give him a better chance with Anglo audiences. Then everything stopped. In 1960, Fender was arrested in Baton Rouge for marijuana possession and sentenced to Angola prison. He served roughly three years before Louisiana governor and songwriter Jimmie Davis helped secure his release. Back in Texas, Fender worked as an auto mechanic, attended college, and played music when he could. For years, Nashville seemed far away. Then producer Huey P. Meaux gave him “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” Fender sang it in English and Spanish. In 1975, the song reached No. 1 on both the country and pop charts. He was thirty-seven. Then Fender went back to the song he had recorded before prison — “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.” The new version reached No. 1 country too. Sixteen years after the song first appeared, Freddy Fender finally got the hit his younger self had never lived long enough to see coming.

She kept renewing her beautician’s license every year, even after “Stand by Your Man” had sold millions. Tammy Wynette had known poverty too well to believe success could never disappear. Before Nashville, she was Wynette Pugh — raised on a Mississippi cotton farm, married at seventeen, and a mother of three by twenty-two. She went to beauty school, worked in a Birmingham salon, and sang at night. When her youngest daughter became seriously ill with spinal meningitis, Tammy kept working while trying to build a singing career. Her husband, Euple Byrd, thought the dream was foolish. After their marriage ended, he reportedly told her, “Dream on.” In 1966, Tammy packed her three daughters into a car and headed for Nashville. Rejection followed until she reached producer Billy Sherrill at Epic Records. He eventually signed her, changed her first name to Tammy, and helped shape the voice country music would soon know everywhere. “Apartment #9” came first. Then “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad,” “I Don’t Wanna Play House,” “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” and finally “Stand by Your Man.” Years later, the story came full circle. Euple Byrd showed up in an autograph line after one of her concerts and asked Tammy to sign something for him. She wrote: “Dream on, baby.”

Before Charley Pride became one of country music’s biggest stars, Nashville had already heard his voice — the problem was getting someone to believe the singer behind it could be accepted. Pride had spent years chasing a baseball career before country singers Red Sovine and Red Foley encouraged him to try Nashville. There, manager Jack Johnson eventually introduced him to producer Cowboy Jack Clement. Clement heard something worth risking money on. In 1965, he paid for Pride to record professional demos at RCA Studio B, then took those recordings to RCA Nashville chief Chet Atkins. Even with the voice on tape, getting a record deal was difficult. A Black country singer was still considered a commercial gamble in Nashville. Atkins decided to trust what he heard. RCA signed Pride, and his first two singles made little impact. Then “Just Between You and Me” reached the country Top 10 in 1966 and earned him his first Grammy nomination. The gamble had worked. Charley Pride would eventually score 29 No. 1 country singles and become CMA Entertainer of the Year. But before all of that, there was simply a demo tape, Cowboy Jack Clement willing to pay for it, and Chet Atkins willing to listen.

Waylon Jennings wrote “Just to Satisfy You” in 1963. It took nearly 20 years — and Willie Nelson — for the song to finally reach No. 1. Waylon wrote it with Don Bowman when his national career had barely begun. He recorded the song early, and it became a local favorite around Phoenix, but it never gave him the breakthrough he was looking for. Still, Waylon never left it behind. He recorded it again and made it the title track of his 1969 album. Other singers, including Glen Campbell, recorded it too. Years passed, and Waylon’s career grew far beyond the young singer who had first written the song. Then in 1982, he returned to it one more time. This time Willie Nelson sang beside him. Their version of “Just to Satisfy You” climbed all the way to No. 1 on Billboard’s country chart and stayed there for two weeks. Waylon once admitted he had almost not recorded the song at all because he didn’t think it was very good. Nearly two decades later, it was sitting at No. 1. Sometimes a song simply has to wait for its moment.
