Chapter 1
## The Choice He Made
The elevator doors were closing when Michael caught Robert’s arm.
“Emma is in that room. Where are you going?”
Robert looked toward the hospital room where his daughter lay surrounded by machines.
In one hand, he held a small bouquet. In the other was a folded program for Daniel’s school play.
“I’m going to the school.”
Michael stared at his seventy-nine-year-old father-in-law.
“Tonight? The doctor said she may not have much time.”
Robert’s fingers tightened around the program.
“Daniel is expecting someone.”
“His mother needs you!”
Robert’s eyes filled with tears, but his voice remained steady.
“I made my choice.”
Michael released his arm as if he no longer recognized him.
“If you walk away now, don’t expect me to explain this to Daniel.”
Robert entered the elevator without answering.
Forty minutes later, he sat alone in the front row of a crowded school auditorium. Onstage, nine-year-old Daniel searched the audience for his parents.
His face fell—until he saw his grandfather.
Robert raised the bouquet.
Daniel smiled.
As the lights dimmed, Robert removed a sealed envelope from inside his coat. Emma’s handwriting appeared across the front:
**FOR DAD—OPEN ONLY WHEN DANIEL IS ONSTAGE.**
Robert tore it open with trembling fingers.
The first sentence made him cover his mouth to stop himself from crying.
*Dad, if you are reading this from the auditorium, then you kept the promise I was too afraid to explain.*
