THE BOX HE LEFT AT HER WEDDING

Chapter 1

The Man She Asked to Leave

.

“Dad, you need to go.”

Henry Walker thought he had misunderstood his daughter.

Emily stood before him in her wedding dress, glancing toward the guests gathering beneath the chandeliers.

“My suit?” he asked.

The brown jacket was old and slightly loose, but it was clean. His late wife had chosen it for him years ago.

“Nathan’s family built this entire hotel,” Emily whispered. “People are staring.”

“I came to walk you down the aisle.”

“I’ll walk alone.”

Henry looked past her at the empty chair reserved for the bride’s father.

“Did Nathan ask you to do this?”

Emily did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Henry reached inside his jacket and removed a worn wooden box.

“This was your wedding gift.”

He placed it on the table between them.

“Give it to Richard. He’ll know what it means.”

Then he turned toward the exit.

Emily carried the box to her future father-in-law. Richard Cross opened it without interest.

Inside lay an old photograph and a folded document yellowed with age.

Richard read the first line.

His face lost all color.

“Where did you get this?”

“My father left it.”

Richard looked toward the doors just as Henry reached them.

He seized the microphone from the wedding coordinator.

“Stop the ceremony!”

The music died.

Every guest turned.

Richard held up the document with a trembling hand.

“No one gets married,” he said, “until someone tells me why the man who saved this family was just thrown out.”
