Chapter 4
The Missing Fifteen Seconds
The video began with Ivy leaving the study table to help Ms. Patel at the front desk.
Her backpack remained on the chair.
Several students walked past without stopping.
Then Ms. Harrow entered the frame.
She looked toward the ceiling camera before approaching Ivy’s chair. She removed a brown envelope from beneath a folder, opened the front compartment of the backpack and slid the envelope inside.
Before leaving, she carefully closed the zipper.
No one in the library spoke as the video ended.
Principal Ellison replayed it.
This time, Ivy watched Vice Principal Bell instead of the screen.
He had gone pale.
The governing board called an emergency meeting that afternoon. Ms. Harrow was required to attend remotely.
At first, she denied everything.
Then Principal Ellison displayed the video.
Ms. Harrow covered her face.
“I was told no one would be harmed,” she whispered.
“You planted a stolen examination in a student’s bag,” Principal Ellison said. “How could you believe no one would be harmed?”
Ms. Harrow began to cry.
She explained that Bell had ordered her to raise Carter’s grade and several others. When Ivy noticed the changes, Bell became afraid she would expose a pattern going back almost four years.
He needed Ivy discredited before anyone examined her evidence.
Bell had promised Ms. Harrow that Ivy would receive a brief suspension, lose her council position and remain silent to protect her scholarship.
“He said the envelope would never be opened,” Ms. Harrow said. “He said it was only meant to frighten her.”
Ivy felt her mother take her hand.
Bell called the confession a desperate lie.
But investigators found messages on Ms. Harrow’s school tablet.
One message from Bell read:
Make certain the bag is hers. I will handle the cameras and the report.
Another instructed her to print the examination in the library because its printer was not connected to the faculty audit dashboard.
The school’s legal adviser ended the meeting immediately.
Bell was placed on administrative leave. Ms. Harrow was removed from the classroom pending a formal investigation. The governing board ordered an independent review of four years of student grades, scholarship decisions and disciplinary cases.
Before leaving, Ms. Harrow asked to speak to Ivy.
“I was afraid of losing my job,” she said. “That does not excuse what I did.”
Ivy did not offer forgiveness.
Not yet.
“You were afraid of losing your job,” she replied. “I was about to lose my future.”
Outside the meeting room, dozens of students waited in the hallway.
The same students who had whispered about Ivy now watched her in silence.
Principal Ellison stepped in front of them.
“Ivy Chen did not steal the examination,” she announced. “She was deliberately framed.”
For the first time in two days, Ivy could breathe without feeling the weight of an accusation on her chest.
But the investigation was not finished.
Inside Bell’s locked office, auditors had discovered a cabinet containing twelve student files.
Ivy’s name was not the only one inside.
